In cooperation with READ ACROSS AMERICA 2022, the Scranton High School Student Council, dedicated to community service programed a week full of fun and reading! Please enjoy the recorded books, some in English and Spanish, along with reflection ideas and activities provided.

DAY 1 - "All Are Welcome" by Alexandra Penfold

Reflection (Conversation Starters):

· Do you have a friend at school who is from a different country?

· Do you have a friend at school who speaks a different language at home other than English?

· Is there anyone in the cafeteria that always brings a lunch to school that is different from yours?

· Do you have a friend at school who moves different from you? Maybe they use a wheeled mobility device, crutches or a walking brace.

· What are some of the things that are the same between you and your friends? Do you all like the same games? Do you have some of the same types of pets?

Activity:

· Learn "hello" in a different language! Spanish, Sign Language, etc. Utilize Google Translate for sound pronunciation.

Spirit Activity:

Wear something to represent your family's culture or hometown.

DAY 2 - "The Book Tree" by Paul Czajak

Reflection (Conversation Starters):

· Where do I love to read?

· What stories are important to me?

Spirit Activity:

Wear something to represent a character from your favorite book!

DAY 3 - "When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree" by Jamie L. B. Deenihan

Reflection (Conversation Starters):

· Did you ever receive a gift that you did not like or were you ever in a situation you did not like? How did you react and respond? Would you respond differently after reading this story?

· Did you ever try lemonade? What other fruits can you mix with it to create creative flavors?

Activity:

· Create Emotion Puppets: Using card stock (or paper, cardboard, etc) and popsicle sticks (or spoons, straws, etc), create simple puppets to represent the following emotions: happy, sad, excited, afraid, and angry. Add more if you’d like! As you illustrate each emotion, practice the expression yourself. If you add color, consider which color best represents each emotion.

Wear the color yellow to represent the lemons on a lemon tree!

DAY 4 - "Silly Milly" by Wendy Cheyette Lewison

DAY 5 - "Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match" (English & Espanol) by Monica Brown

Activity:

· Compliment a classmate!

· Discuss personality traits!

Spirit Activity:

Wear mismatched socks and/or clothing!

EXTRA RESOURCE - "My Grandparents and I" by Samuel Caraballo

Activity:

· Write a letter/note to a role model that you have.

· Discuss/ write about a fond memory that you have about your grandparents.

Spirit Activity:

Dress like your role model (this can be a family member, friend, an author, a celebrity, an influential athlete, an inventor, a president and more)!
